A procedure in which damaged tissues or organs are repaired or replaced with genetically identical cells that originate from undifferentiated stem cells

  • Most common scenario is the production of embryos for use in research, particularly stem cell research
  • The goal is not to create human clones, but rather harvest stem cells for research on human development and disease treatment
  • A bit about stem cells:
    • Can be used to generate virtually any specialized cell in the body
    • Extracted from the egg after it has divided for about 5 days, called a blastocyst
  • The hope is to eventually use stem cells as replacement cells to treat diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer's, and cancer
